Fish Tycoon General Guide

Introduction:

Fish Tycoon is another interesting game made by 'Last Day of Work'. The same
group created 'Virtual Villagers' and the general concept of the two games is
the same. The games operate as a virtual window giving access to a
microcosm. Like a presiding deity, you can involve yourself in the lives of
the inhabitants as much or as little as you please. 'Fish Tycoon' basically
is a virtual aquarium and you can make it your screensaver as well if you like.

You begin the game with a few juvenile fish. Using a Hormone Treatment, you
can accelerate their growth to adulthood immediately, then breed them. You
begin with $300. Isola dollars. The game directs you to spend $20. on an
ornamental shell. It then will smite your fish with a fungus, requiring a
$40. purchase of Fungal Medicine. How you spend the remainder of your funds
is your choice entirely.

In point of fact, you do NOT need the Shell. Ornaments improve sales but you
can sell your fish without having any ornaments at all in your tank. I
suggest that you ignore the game prompt and save your money to buy more eggs
at this stage of the game. In fact, here are the steps I would recommend
initially:

1. Hatch the set of eggs in your inventory by placing them in the tank.
2. Purchase another set of Level 1 Eggs for $120. Isola dollars and hatch
them by placing them in the tank.
3. Use the Growth Hormone now to accelerate the growth of the fish in your
tank.
4. Buy the Fungal Treatment as the game WILL visit fungus upon your fish.
5. Try to acquire a breed that can sell for about $20. but do not sell the
fish until you have bred a few of them.
6. Save your money in order to buy the two pumps. Create basic fish and sell
those, rather than experimenting too much with hybrids at this stage.

The situation at the start of the game is that you have only the most
primitive fish tank and some hardy fish that are low in value. You need to
breed your fish to create more valuable hybrids. At the same time, these
hybrid fish will require more research and education as well as better
conditions if they are to survive.

Basic Gameplay

Be aware of the fact that there is no gender in this game. ALL fish can be
impregnated and a pregnant fish can impregnate another fish. In other words,
you can breed two fish back and forth. There is no need to wait until a fish
gives birth in order to use it to impregnate another fish.

To impregnate any fish, place it in the small isolation tank on the bottom
right of the screen. Place another fish on top of it to impregnate it. You
then can transfer the pregnant fish back to the main tank, replace it with the
other half of your breeding pair and impregnate it using the first (now
pregnant) fish. This is the quickest way to make money with a valuable pair
of fish.

Whenever a fish is in the small isolation tank at the bottom right of the
screen (in the toolbar area), you can press on the 'Species' option to see
Details about that fish. The Details screen displays the value of the fish as
well as two generations of its family tree. This is a way to discover the
different combinations that create new hybrids. The other way is by using one
of the lists at the end of this guide!

Whenever a fish dies, it should be chucked into the rubbish bin at the bottom
right of the screen as quickly as possible. Dead fish can contaminate your
tank, making other fish ill or causing their health to decrease slowly.

The 'Supplies' option on the toolbar will take you to the Supply Shop where
you can purchase fish eggs, medications, pumps, plants and ornaments for your
tank. Go to the Supply Shop to sell fish in your Sale Tank. All adult fish
in your Sale Tank are presumed to be for sale. If you do not wish to sell a
specific fish in that tank, raise its price by using the option in the Details
menu. If you raise a price high enough, no one will buy the fish. (You do
this only as a last resort, if you do not have enough space in your other
tanks for all the fish you wish to keep.)

Your tank is limited to 20 fish. If you continue to impregnate fish without
having any space in your tank, no babies will be born. Tips on how to use
your Sale Tank as a second tank are included in this guide.

The 'Menu' option is used to change players or to change the Game Speed. When
you are not paying attention to your tanks, reduce the Speed to 'Half Time'
Speed.

Lists and their Importance

This guide includes a number of sections at the end that consist of lists.
Lists are crucial to breeding if you are determined to create specific species
and types of fish in this game. I opt for lists rather than charts as I
believe they are easier to read.

The lists that are included are:

Lists of actual Fish, their Values and the combinations that created them
Lists of Fish Types and the results of all combinations
Lists of Fish Species and the results of all combinations
Lists of All Combinations that create specific Species

In other words, depending on your preference, you can find a list that gives
all results for breeding a Silky to another type or a list that gives the
results of breeding a Beta to any other species or a list that will give you
all the combinations of Species to create a Beta from two other species.

Magic Fish of Fertility

Very early in the game, you will acquire a Magical Fish of Fertility. This is
the Greenfin Spotanus, one of the 7 Magical Fish in the game. It is not a
very attractive fish, but it is quite valuable and sells for $50. If you can
acquire or produce another Greenfin Spotanus, you can breed them and generate
a good income.

To accomplish this, however, you may need to purchase Eggs from the Supply
Shop. They cost $120. and there is no guarantee that another Greenfin
Spotanus will be among them. The other way to acquire a Greenfin Spotanus is
by breeding a Twin-Fin Spotanus to a Spined Spotanus.

There are two Species of 'Original' fish in this game. 'Original' fish are
fish that cannot be created by breeding two other species. Neither Shark nor
Spotanus can be created from any other species of fish. If the game does not
give you a Spotanus at the start, one Spotanus usually will be included in any
batch of 'ordinary' Level 1 Eggs purchased from the Supply Shop.

Improving your Tank:

Your other choices of purchase initially are improvements to your tank in the
form of a Snail at $80. or an Aeration System costing $70. After buying both
of these, you should purchase a Temperature Regulator costing $175. These
three purchases will make your tank a more viable environment.

Research:

Even with a better tank, however, rare hybrids will die if you do not educate
yourself. There are three types of research that you can purchase:

1. Food Research: Level 2 costs $200.
2. Environment Research: Level 2 costs $500.
3. Research Advertising: Level 2 costs $350.

Fish Food Research: Better types of food help ward off disease and fish will
have to be fed less often. You have level one.

Fish Environment Research: Researching fish environment allows rarer fish to
survive and thrive in your tanks. You have level one.

Advertising Research: Advertising is critical to keep your shop crowded and
to keep the cash coming in. You have level one.

Fish Supplies:

Supplies include medication, potions, fish eggs, pumps, magical creatures and
plants and ornaments for your tank.

Medications:

Ick Treatment: $30.
Ick looks like white specks on your fish. One drop every half hour until
cured. Contains 3 doses.

Fungal Treatment: $40.
Fungus looks like a green growth on a fish. One drop every half hour until
cured. Contains 3 doses.

You will need these periodically throughout the game. One dose usually will
cure your fish, but it depends on how long they have been afflicted.
Unfortunately, you have only one slot for medications in your inventory, so if
your fish have Ick but you have Fungal Treatment in your inventory, you will
be obliged to chuck it out in order to replace it with Ick Medicine.

Potions:

Fish Vitamins: $140.
This stimulates the metabolism of fish. It causes fish to temporarily
thrive. Contains 3 doses.

Growth Hormone: $380
This encourages vigourous growth in fish. Careful not to use too much!
Contains 3 doses.

Unknown Chemical: $650
This rare chemical is from a genetic lab. The supplier insists that it fell
off a truck. Contains one dose.

Fish Eggs:

Common Fish Eggs: $120.
These eggs were found in the lagoon of Isola. Just drop them in water and
wait.
Note: These are Level 1 Eggs and produce fish that can be sustained in a
Level 1 Environment.

Unusual Fish Eggs: $450.
These eggs will need more care to survive. Research Fish Environment before
you try to hatch these.
Note: These are Level 2 Eggs and produce fish that can be sustained in a
Level 2 Environment.

Rare Fish Eggs: $1200.
These eggs will need expert care to survive. Research Fish Environment before
you try to hatch these.
Note: These are Level 3 Eggs and produce fish that can be sustained in a
Level 3 Environment.

Level 1 Eggs are the only eggs you ever need to buy, as they will provide you
with any missing original 'types' that you need for breeding purposes such as
Silky or Twin-Fin. Level 2 and Level 3 eggs will not give you any fish that
you could not breed by yourself.

Aeration System: $70.
This item will help your fish survive by putting oxygen in the water. Comes
fully installed.

Temperature Regulator: $175
This item will help your fish survive by maintaining the correct temperature.
Comes fully installed.

N.B. Buy both pumps as soon as possible.

Natural Aids:

Cleaning Snail: $80. (?)
This cute tiny snail will never tire of cleaning and polishing your tanks.
Comes fully installed.

Golden Seahorse: $1300.
The seahorse magically enhances your environment and the life of your fish.
Comes fully installed.

Plant of Nutrition from Isola: $200.
This plant releases nutritious fibres which can help prevent starvation.
Comes fully installed.

Plant of Incubation from Isola: $350.
Exposure to plants from Isola increases the viability of purchased eggs.
Comes fully installed.

Plant of Fertility from Isola: $1250.
This plant encourages more live babies from pregnant fish that are exposed to
it. Comes fully installed.

Ornaments:

Ornaments help with sales.

Shell Ornament: $20.
With this pretty shell in your tank, you are sure to draw additional crowds.
Installs into your current tank.

Pagoda Ornament: $50.
This charming pagoda will add style and elegance to your tank! Installs into
your current tank.

Diver Ornament: $350.
It is the classic aquatic diver. No tank is complete without one! Installs
into your current tank.

Fancy Coral Ornament: $950.
Fish love coral, and so do your customers. Installs into your current tank.
Sunken Antique Column: $1500.
This column ornament will make your fish think they are in the waters of
Greece! Installs into your current tank.

Sunken Ship Ornament: $3500.
Your fish, as well as your customers, will admire the mysterious beauty of
this ship. Installs into your current tank.

Second Tank: $450.
An extra full sized fish tank will be very useful for breeding and
organising. Comes ready to us.

Fish Food Research:

Better types of food help ward off disease and fish to be fed less often. You
have level one.
Price: $200.

Level 3: $650.

Fish Environment Research
Researching fish environment allows rarer fish to survive and thrive in your
tanks. You have level one.
Price: $500.

Level 3: $1750.

Advertising Research
Advertising is critical to keep your shop crowded and to keep the cash coming
in. You have level one.
Price: $350.

Level 3:

Eggs:

When you buy fish eggs, you should obtain five baby fish. You need Level 2
Environment for the second level of fish eggs and Level 3 for the third level.

Breeding Rules:

Remember that your tank only holds 20 fish. If you make fish pregnant but do
not have any space for the babies, they will not be born.

If you cross-breed, but the resulting hybrid is too fragile for your
environment, it will die usually at the age of 5. If it does not die at the
age of 5, it will die at age 18 or 19, cruelly depriving you of the chance to
see the adult fish.

Oddly enough, there are no genders in this game. A pregnant fish actually can
impregnate another fish. You therefore can double your population very
quickly by breeding two fish back and forth and allowing both to give birth
simultaneously.

Making Your Sale Tank a Second Tank

There are two ways to use your Sale Tank as a temporary second tank before you
can afford to purchase a second tank. The first is by transferring all your
baby fish to the Sale Tank and by allowing them to grow to adulthood there.
Any fish that is not an adult cannot be sold, so you are in no danger of
losing your baby fish until they reach the age of 20.

The other way is by transferring adult fish to the Sale Tank and by not
selling any fish until you have acquired enough space in your first tank to
transfer them back to that tank. This is not an ideal situation but in a
pinch, it works.

The population limit for any regular tank is 20 but you can keep a maximum of
21 fish in your Sale Tank.

Fragile Hybrids:

Even at the start of the game, you may be able to create a few hybrids.
Hybrids tend to be more fragile than other types of fish. By grabbing any
fish with your cursor hand, you will be able to see its statistics in terms of
general health and level of hunger. When a fish is hardy, its health bar
should be completely filled. You should keep its hunger bar filled as well in
order to maintain full health. Whenever a fish becomes ill or hungry and the
situation is allowed to continue, health will decline gradually.

Hybrids often are born without a full health bar and as they grow, the health
bar will diminish further. This decline is gradual but often a fragile hybrid
will die either at the age of five or the age of 18, before ever reaching
adult status. There is nothing you can do to change this situation except by
purchasing a higher level of environmental research. Once you have Level 2
Environmental knowledge, you will be able to create hybrids with a full health
bar.

If your baby fish continue to die at the age of 5, it is because the hybrids
you have created are too fragile to survive in your environment. There is no
point in creating the same fragile hybrids again and again without boosting
the level of your tank environment. Although hybrids usually are more
valuable than original breeds, you need to learn which hybrids can survive in
a basic tank.

N.B. Even within the same species, some types are more fragile than others.
For example, a 'Greatsail Beta' is one of the most fragile Betas. Even with
Level 2 Environment skills, you will be unable to produce a Greatsail Beta who
will survive to adulthood. The baby fish will be born if there is sufficient
space in your tank, but will die before it reaches the age of 20.

Fish Breeds:

Two different fish breeds can create a new breed of fish. You therefore are
not limited to the breeds of fish that you have at the start of the game.
Playing the game is a matter of experimenting with different combinations.
This is part of the fun as well.

The type of fish that you obtain is determined by the types of the two fish
that you breed. An Orange Fish when bred with another Orange Fish will create
a third Orange Fish. If both fish are of the same breed as well as type, the
offspring will be the same as well. If, however, you breed an Orange Fish
with a Silky Fish, the result will be a Pink Fish. If both fish are from the
same species, the offspring will be from that species as well. If the two
parent fish are from different species, you will create a third species.

The breed and type of fish that you will obtain never is random. Lists are
included at the end of this guide.

Initial Strategies

You need to remember that this game is entitled 'Fish Tycoon'. It therefore
is not simply a matter of maintaining a healthy aquarium but of being able to
sell your fish. Do not be afraid or hesitant to sell your fish. If you
create a particularly beautiful fish that you would like to keep in your
aquarium, simply place the fish in isolation to determine its parentage and
create another fish of the same species and type. Fish do not die of old age
in this game, but a fragile fish in an environment that does not suit it will
weaken gradually and die if you do not improve the tank environment. It
therefore is a good idea to assess the status of each fish on a regular basis.

A healthy fish will have a full green health bar. A fish that is weakened
will have a yellow, half-filled health bar. A fish that is about to die will
have only a small amount of red in the health bar. Any fish with red in the
health bar needs to be sold as quickly as possible. Customers cannot discern
between a fish that is weak and one that is healthy. The only fish that
cannot be sold are young or diseased fish.

With Level 1 Environment, it is better to create healthy fish than valuable
ones. If you have two Greenfin Spotanus fish, you can create healthy,
valuable Level 1 fish to sell, but if not, make do with the breeds that you
have until you can purchase Level 2 Environment skill.

Make certain that there is enough room in your tank for baby fish. Transfer
all babies to the sale tank to make room for new fish.

Fish Breeding for Beginners

At the start of the game, the best way to make enough money for all necessary
upgrades is by choosing one breed of fish and breeding that species and type
again and again. There are a couple of Level 1 Fish that are suitable for
this project. You have a better chance of acquiring a species and type of
Level 1 Fish that is fairly valuable if you buy Level 1 Eggs at the very
beginning of the game. The types of fish that you usually will have at the
beginning are Silky, Greenfin, Orange and Twin-Fin. The first Level 1 species
are Beta, Fatfish, Fruitfish, Sharks, Spotanus and/or Stickfish.
Breeding two species together usually will result in a third species. This is
true in the case of Beta, Fatfish and Fruitfish. They can be created by
breeding two other species. Sharks and Spotanus, however, cannot. You
therefore need to acquire Sharks and Spotanus through purchase of Eggs from
the Supply Shop.

To make money at the beginning of the game, as stated above, you need to
acquire or create a fairly valuable fish, then breed it again and again with
another fish of the same species and type.

The best fish for this project are the Greenfin Spotanus, valued at $50.
and/or the Orange Fruitfish, valued at $20.

Greenfin Spotanus: $50. Isola dollars

This is the 'Magical Fish of Fertility'. You should acquire one almost
immediately, either from the eggs that are in your inventory or from the first
set of Level 1 eggs that you purchase. Five fish usually emerge from one set
of Level 1 Eggs.

If you do not have a Greenfin Spotanus but have other types of Spotanus, you
can breed the following to obtain a Greenfin:

Spined Spotanus + Twin-Fin Spotanus = Greenfin Spotanus

Orange Fruitfish: $20.

If you do not have an Orange Fruitfish, but have other types of Fruitfish, you
can breed the following to obtain an Orange:

Silky Fruitfish + Greenfin Fruitfish = Orange Fruitfish

If you need to create a Fruitfish, you can do so by breeding a Beta with a
Shark.

Silky Shark + Greenfin Beta = Orange Fruitfish
Silky Beta + Greenfin Shark = Orange Fruitfish
Orange Beta + Orange Shark = Orange Fruitfish

As you can see, it is easier to create or acquire Orange Fruitfish than it is
to acquire a Greenfin Spotanus, simply because there are many methods by which
to do so.

Remember that types always follow the same rules in terms of what two types
will produce, irrespective of species. In other words, a Silky and a Greenfin
always produce an Orange and a Spined and a Twin-Fin always produce a
Greenfin. The values of each type of fish vary greatly from species to
species.

Both the Greenfin Spotanus and the Orange Fruitfish are Level 1 Fish. They
therefore can survive indefinitely in a Level 1 Environment. That is one of
my reasons for recommending them at this stage of the game. Breed them again
and again until you have a tank filled either with one or the other, then sell
all but two breeding pairs. If you do this, you will be able to afford Level
2 Environment Research, the most important step in developing the ability to
breed Level 2 fish.

Creating New Level 1 Fish

There are six Level 1 Species: Beta, Fatfish, Fruitfish, Shark, Spotanus and
Stickfish. These are the fish that will be in your aquarium at the beginning
of the game, and any Level 1 Eggs will hatch into one of these species as
well. You probably will not have all six Level 1 Species at the start. You
can acquire them in one of two ways, either by purchasing Level 1 Eggs or by
breeding two different species of Level 1 Fish. Some inter-species breeding
couples will produce Level 2 Hybrid fish but others will produce a Level 1
Fish.

I have compiled lists of all the results of inter-species breeding of Level 1
fish and divided them into two separate categories. The first category
includes all Level 1 results. The second category includes all Level 2
results. Fish are listed alphabetically. The same breeding pair will be
listed twice, for easy reference. In other words, fish are grouped
alphabetically and organised according to the first fish in the breeding
pair. If you wish to find the results of breeding a Beta to any other Level 1
fish, you will be able to find the results instantly by looking at the Beta
group in each section.

Here are lists of each Level 1 Fish with the fish that will result from
breeding it to another Level 1 Fish:

Level 1 Results:

Beta + Fruitfish = Stickfish
Beta + Shark = Fruitfish

Fatfish + Spotanus = Stickfish
Fatfish + Stickfish = Fruitfish

Fruitfish + Beta = Stickfish
Fruitfish + Shark = Fatfish

Shark + Beta = Fruitfish
Shark + Fruitfish = Fatfish

Spotanus + Fatfish = Stickfish
Spotanus + Stickfish = Beta

Stickfish + Fatfish = Fruitfish
Stickfish + Spotanus = Beta

Hybrid Level 2 Results:

Beta + Stickfish = Leaffish
Beta + Spotanus = Bananafish
Beta + Fatfish = Goldbulb

Fatfish + Beta = Goldbulb
Fatfish + Fruitfish = Goldshark
Fatfish + Shark = Arrowfish

Fruitfish + Fatfish = Goldshark
Fruitfish + Spotanus = Leaffish
Fruitfish + Stickfish = Goldbulb

Spotanus + Beta = Bananafish
Spotanus + Fruitfish = Leaffish
Spotanus + Shark = Goldbulb

Shark + Fatfish = Arrowfish
Shark + Spotanus = Goldbulb
Shark + Stickfish = Goldshark

Stickfish + Beta = Leaffish
Stickfish + Fruitfish = Goldbulb
Stickfish + Shark = Goldshark

These Level 2 Hybrids will survive temporarily in a Level 1 Tank.

Hybrids for Beginners

There are a few hybrids that can be created from Level 1 fish that can survive
for a fair amount of time in a Level 1 tank. Not all types of each hybrid can
survive, but a few can. The species are Arrowfish, Leaffish, Goldbulbs and
Goldsharks. The types that are hardiest are Greenfin, Orange, Pink, Silky,
Spined and Twin-Fin. Flagged, Golden, Hornet, Speckled and Wasp will survive
temporarily but actually need a Level 2 Environment to maintain full health.
Use them for breeding and/or sell them immediately. If you keep them for any
length of time, you will find their health reduced radically. Sell them
before they die!

Arrowfish are produced by breeding a Shark with a Fatfish.

For example:

Silky Fatfish + Orange Shark = Pink Arrowfish

Leaffish generally are produced by breeding a Spotanus with a Fruitfish or a
Beta with a Stickfish.
For example:

Greenfin Spotanus + Orange Fruitfish = Spined Leaffish
Silky Stickfish + Orange Beta = Pink Leaffish
Twin-Fin Beta + Orange Stickfish = Speckled Leaffish

Other types of Leaffish can be created by other combinations. Most Leaffish
that can be sustained temporarily in a Level 1 Environment have a value in the
range of $20. As you can see, apart from the Speckled Leaffish which is a
Level 2 type of Level 2 hybrid, the Spined and Pink Leaffish both are Level 1
types of a Level 2 Fish, giving them a slightly better chance of survival than
the Speckled Leaffish in a Level 1 Environment.

The Speckled Leaffish is the second Magical Fish, but will not survive long in
a Level 1 Environment. You really need to have purchased Level 2 Environment
Research in order to sustain a Speckled Leaffish.

Goldbulbs are produced usually by breeding a Shark with a Spotanus or a
Fruitfish with a Stickfish.

For example:

Twin-Fin Shark + Silky Spotanus = Golden Goldbulb
Orange Fruitfish + Silky Stickfish = Pink Goldbulb
Spined Shark + Greenfin Spotanus = Speckled Goldbulb

The values of these range from $20. to $30. Of those that are viable
temporarily in a Level 1 Tank, the Golden Goldbulb is the most valuable.

Goldsharks can be sustained temporarily in a Level 1 tank as well. They are
created by combining a Stickfish and Shark or a Fruitfish and Fatfish.

For example:

Silky Stickfish + Twin-Fin Shark = Golden Goldshark
Orange Fruitfish + Silky Fatfish = Pink Goldshark

The types of Goldsharks that can survive temporarily in a Level 1 tank are not
terribly valuable. They can be sold at most for $10. by raising the default
price by a couple of dollars.

Game Speed

As in Virtual Villagers, another Last Day of Work game, there are four
different Game Speeds that can be set in the Options Menu.

Paused or Stopped
1/2 Speed
Normal Speed
Speed 2x (Double Speed)

Although Double Speed undoubtedly is the most fun, you must pay attention to
the tank. If your attention is elsewhere, fish will die, especially any
newborn infant fish. Newborn fish need to be fed immediately. If you are
operating your tank at Double Speed, you must feed the fish as soon as they
are born. If you are operating at Half Speed, you will endanger any fish born
while you are away, but the consequences may not be as dire.

Buying Fish Eggs

The prices of Fish Eggs are as follows:

Level 1 Eggs: 120
Level 2 Eggs
Level 3 Eggs:

It is a very good idea to buy Level 1 Eggs as soon as possible in the game,
especially if you do not have a Greenfin Spotanus initially. The Greenfin
Spotanus is not only a magical fish that brings fertility to your aquarium but
it is one of the most valuable Level 1 Fish. Even if you have a Greenfin
Spotanus at the start, you may wish to buy Level 1 Eggs for the chance of
acquiring another, allowing you to breed them.

Do not buy Level 2 Eggs until you have researched Level 2 Environment. It
simply is not worthwhile as they are not likely to survive in a Level 1
Environment.

Hatching Eggs

It is always a good idea to be present when eggs are hatched

Upgrading your Environment

Purchasing the ability to research your Environment at a specific level does
not give you that level of experience. You then must proceed to experiment
with different breeds. As you continue to breed your fish, your experience
level will increase until you have achieved the next level of experience.

Apart from experience, there are other ways to improve the quality of your
tank by purchasing items such as the Magical

Types in terms of Hardiness

As I experimented first with Betas, in an attempt to acquire every possible
variety, my conclusions are based on Beta research. However, it appears that
all fish follow the same rules in this game where type is concerned. It can
be assumed, therefore, that a Greatsail is a Level 3 type for every species.

The hardiest Betas are the Silky, Greenfin, Spined, Pink, Orange and Twin-Fin
Betas. Even if you acquire them through cross-breeding, they will survive
indefinitely without losing any health if they are fed properly and given
medication instantly if they become ill. Next are the Flagged, Hornet, Wasp,
Golden and Speckled Betas, basically Level 2 varieties. They may survive
temporarily in a Level 1 Environment but will lose their health gradually and
ultimately die. It is these fish that need to be sold when their health is at
the red stage and almost depleted. Tiger, Oriental, Stubby, Canary, Razorback
and Greatfin Betas appear to require Level 3 Environment to survive. If you
attempt to produce them in a Level 2 Environment, they will die before they
become fully grown, either as early as age 5 or as late as age 18, depending
on your other upgrades.

If you are breeding in order to try to obtain every type of fish for one
species, the Level 1 types that are the most difficult to obtain from breeding
are Silky and Twin-Fin. These types are most easily obtained from purchased
Level 1 Eggs. Ordinarily you will have a Twin-Fin fish from one species at
the start of the game. It is more unusual to obtain two Twin-Fin fish at the
beginning, but once in awhile you can do so by purchasing more Level 1 Eggs.
Twin-Fin fish can be created only by breeding two Twin-Fin fish. Silky Fish
can be created only by breeding two Silky fish or by breeding a Silky with a
Tiger.

It appears to be 'either/or' in terms of being given a Silky or a Twin-Fin.
Seldom will you have both a Silky and a Twin-Fin of the same species at the
start of the game. To complete any 'set' in terms of acquiring every type of
fish in any given species, you either will be obliged to purchase eggs until
you obtain the type you need or breed two other species of Silky or Twin-Fin
to create the fish you need.

The best types to obtain through breeding at Level 1 are Orange, Pink, Spined
and Greenfin. All these are hardy types and will maintain full health,
provided they are fed and are not allowed to suffer from any disease for any
prolonged period.

If you have no fish of a specific Level 1 breed, you either can purchase or
breed one by combining two other breeds. For example, if you do not have any
Betas at the start of the game, you either can buy some Level 1 eggs or you
can combine two other Level 1 species of fish.

To create a Beta using two other Level 1 breeds, you need to breed a Spotanus
with a Stickfish. Make certain that the combination will 'net' a Level 1
Beta if your environment is Level 1.

If you wish to create a Silky Beta, for example:

Silky Spotanus + Silky Stickfish = Silky Beta

Advertising and Sales

The Advertising Research appears to be the least useful skill and should be
acquired only when you have completed all levels of Food and Environment
Research. Although fish will sell faster with higher levels of Advertising
Research, they WILL sell with the Basic Level 1 research and without any
expensive ornaments in your tank. In point of fact, you do not need to buy
the Shell at the start of the game, even though the game prompt will order you
to do so.

It is more important to purchase the Snail, Seahorse and four Plants than it
is to buy any Advertising Research or ornaments for the tank.

Seven Magical Fish: The First Three

The first Magical Fish is the Greenfin Spotanus, discovered at the start of
the game. The second is the Magical Fish of Sustenance and is the Speckled
Leaffish. You need Level 2 Environment to sustain Speckled Fish of any
breed. The third Magical Fish is the Crimson Comet and is the Magic Fish of
Healing. You need a Level 3 Environment to sustain a Crimson Fish of any
breed.

Each time you discover a Magical Fish, you will see a different prompt:

Magic Fish 1: You discovered the Magic Fish of Fertility! With this fish in
your tank, pregnant fish tend to produce an extra baby.

Magic Fish 2: You discovered the Magic Fish of Sustenance! With this fish in
your tank, you won't need to feed as often.

Magic Fish 3: You discovered the Magic Fish of Curing! With this fish in your
tank, sick fish have a better chance of being cured.

Once you have completed Level 3 Environment research, the fun truly begins as
any breeding combination will result in a viable fish. You therefore need not
look at the charts if you simply want to be surprised by new types and
breeds. On the other hand, if you wish to complete a 'set' consisting of
every possible type of fish in any single species, you will find that you need
the charts as you may lack one type needed to complete the set and you then
will be obliged to breed two other species through one or two generations to
obtain the species and type needed.

Finding the other four Magical Fish requires completion of Level 3 Environment
Research.

Creating the Second Magical Fish

Here is an example showing how one can created the Speckled Leaffish with only
Level 2 Environment.

A Spotanus and a Fruitfish create a Leaffish.
A Beta and a Stickfish create a Leaffish.

A Greenfin and a Spined created a Speckled Fish.
A Twin-Fin and an Orange create a Speckled Fish.

It is impossible to create a Twin-Fin unless you have two Twin-Fins. It
therefore is easiest to try to find or create a Greenfin and a Spined.

I had a Spined Spotanus and a Spined Fruitfish. I had a Greenfin Spotanus but
did not have a Greenfin Fruitfish. I therefore needed to breed the Spined
Fruitfish with the Greenfin Spotanus.

Greenfin Spotanus + Spined Fruitfish = Speckled Leaffish

In other words, in order to create the Second Magical Fish, you need a Spined
and a Greenfin in either the Beta/Stickfish combination or the
Spotanus/Fruitfish combination.

Another way of creating it would be to combine a Spined Leaffish with a
Greenfin Leaffish. It is more likely in the early stages of the game,
however, that you would have Level 1 Fish of the right types to create the
Speckled Leaffish.

The Leaffish is a Level 2 Species and Speckled is a Level 2 Type. The Third
Magical Fish is a Level 3 Species and Level 3 Type, which means that you
really must upgrade your Environment to Level 3 if you wish to sustain it.
Moreover, the rest of the Magical Fish all are Level 3 Fish.

Using your Sale Tank as a Breeding Tank

I have mentioned this elsewhere in this guide but, until you can afford a
second tank, you may wish to use your Sale Tank as a temporary second tank.
The problem is that, each time you open the option to 'Sell Fish', ANY and
EVERY fish in the Sale Tank will be for sale. You therefore need to keep your
favourite or most useful adult fish in your First Tank whenever you open your
Shop for business. Another way to prevent customers from purchasing your fish
is by keeping all your infant or juvenile fish in the Sale Tank. Only adult
fish can be sold. It therefore is possible to use your Sale Tank as
a 'holding tank' for your infant and juvenile fish.

If you do not have enough space in your First Tank for all the adult fish that
you wish to keep, there is one other way to prevent customers from buying your
fish. You can adjust the price of any fish in your Details screeen. Make the
price of any fish you wish to keep exorbitant and it may prevent customers
from purchasing that fish. Remember, however, that when you change the price
of any fish, the price will change for every fish of that type, even in the
future, so change it back to a reasonable price after you close your
virtual 'shop'.

Playing Two Games

There are five file slots on this game and creating more than one 'player'
file has its advantages. As you are limited by the number of fish you can
keep in a tank at any given time, you can experiment with breeds and types
more freely if you have more than one game file. It is best to keep your
second file at a Half-Time Game Speed when you are not playing it actively.
You will find that, even at Half-Time Game Speed, fish will develop at least
one disease in a 24 hour (real time) period.

Advanced Breeding Techniques

The easiest way to make certain that you can create any fish type probably is
by completing a set in any specific breed. If you have all or most of the
types of fish in any breed, you then can breed that species to another to
create a third species and have the option to use any type to create the type
you need. 'Type' in this context refers to variety within any species, such
as Silky or Twin-Fin. By completing a full set or a nearly complete set of
any species, you will broaden your options considerably.

Make certain always to have both a Silky and a Twin-Fin in your tanks. It is
best really to have two Silkys of different breeds and two Twin-Fins. These
are the 'original' types from which all other types can be created. You
cannot create a Silky except from two Silky fish or a Silky and a Tiger. You
cannot create a Twin-Fin except from two Twin-Fin fish. All other types can
be created from more than one combination.

Seven Magical Fish: Magical Fish 4-7

The Fourth Magical Fish is the Oriental Goldbulb, the Magical Fish of Growth.

You will see a prompt: You discovered the Magic Fish of Growth. With this
fish in your tank, young fish tend to grow more rapidly.

An Oriental Goldbulb is created most easily by combining the following:

Crimson Goldbulb + Orange Goldbulb
Crimson Goldshark + Orange Leaffish
Wasp Shark + Spined Spotanus

In fact, there are many combinations that will create a Goldbulb. The
Goldbulb is a Level 2 Species but Oriental is a Level 3 type.

The Fifth Magical Fish is the Orange Snooper.
You will see a prompt: You discovered the Magic Fish of Health! With this
fish in your tank, your fish tend to be healthier.

There are a number of different combinations that will create an Orange
Snooper.

Speckled Shark + Fanned Comet = Orange Snooper

The Sixth Magical Fish is the Wasp Grouper.

The prompt will declare: You discovered the Magic Fish of Mutation! With
this fish in your tank, pregnant fish have a chance of producing a baby not
related to either parent!

In other words, this singularly ugly fish is one of the most fun to keep in a
tank if you enjoy surprises. By the time you can sustain any sort of Grouper
in your tank, however, you probably will have created every species of fish
and be able to produce any variety almost at will.

To create a Wasp Grouper, you can breed the following:

Silky Beta + Spined Comet = Wasp Grouper

There are many other combinations that will give the same result.

The Seventh Magical Fish is the Canary Fire-Arrow, otherwise known as the
Golden Guppy of Isola.

The prompt will state:
A Canary Fire-Arrow is created by combining the following:

Orange Goldbulb + Canary Snooper

You discovered the Golden Guppy of Isola! This ultra-rare fish is a legend.
It's not fully understood, but it will most certainly make you a rich fish
breeder. This fish was added to your trophy case.

Values by Breed:

This section gives the values of each fish listed according to species as well
as the two fish needed to produce it. In many cases, there is more than one
way to create a specific type of fish. For example, to create a Speckled
Fruitfish, you either can mate a Speckled Goldbulb with a Speckled Goldshark
or you can mate a Greenfin Fruitfish with a Spined Fruitfish. The third way
to create a fish is by mating two fish of the same type: in other words, 2
Speckled Fruitfish will create a third Speckled Fruitfish.

Where a fish value is followed by (Original), it simply means that I acquired
the fish through purchase. I will add its progenitors as time permits. The
values given are the default values. You can increase or decrease the price
of any fish by accessing the 'Details' menu.

You may notice that value in every species corresponds to some extent with the
type. The Level 1 types, unless the Fish is a Magical One, tend to be less
valuable than the Level 2 Types and the Level 3 types tend to be the most
valuable of all. In other words, a Speckled Fish of any species probably will
be worth more than the Orange Fish of the same species and the Crimson Fish
will be worth more than both.
